The half-day workshop focuses on the application of real estate development principles to real world situations involving contaminated sites. Instructors will divide participants into groups and guide each group through an interactive exercise focused on several case studies. The exercise is designed to demonstrate the situations, decisions, and outcomes faced by the real estate development community. Participants will understand the developers perspectives on managing (or negotiating) environmental agreements, how environmental liability is managed, and how to analyze real estate transactions. Key topics include deal structure and the impact of liability, financing the deal, the planning process, and market analysis.
Prerequisite: This workshop builds on information covered in the three webinars presented on CLU-IN for the RE-Development Academy. To register for the CLU-IN webinars or to view the archives of the webinars, visit: https://clu-in.org/conf/tio/RE-DevelopmentAcademy1/
Who should register for the RE-Development Academy?
EPA, state and tribal government staff interested in the real estate development process, and how developers integrate property redevelopment with cleanup of contaminated sites.
What is the registration fee?
There is no registration fee. EPA’s Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization (OBLR) is providing this training to EPA, state and tribal government staff. Training is not open to the public.
Which sessions do I need to attend?
The RE-Development Academy includes three webinars and one half-day workshop. Together, they comprise a single, full Academy program designed to provide a general understanding of real estate and redevelopment. Each session builds on information and skills covered in each of the previous sessions in the series. Your participation in each session will ensure you get the most out of the training.
What topics will the webinars cover?
Real Estate Development Basics covers basic real estate nomenclature and concepts, including a general overview of the development process.
Real Estate Market Analysis covers the basics of real estate market analysis to understand how developers make decisions and how to reposition sites and neighborhoods for private investment.
Real Estate Finance Basics focuses on what goes into a real estate development project and how it is financed.
When does registration close?
Webinar registration remains open until the start of each webinar.
What will the half-day workshop cover?

Participating groups in other regions, HQ, state or tribal offices will gather together to work as a team to develop and present the case study redevelopment scenarios. Groups will join the workshop remotely (via Adobe Connect), and will interact on a limited basis with the instructors and students participating onsite.
Coordinators for each region, HQ, state or tribal location will be designated (TBD). Please contact Aimee Storm in EPA OBLR (storm.aimee@epa.gov) if you want to be the coordinator for your location.
What technological or other requirements does my location need for live streaming the workshop?
Large conference room with video screen, computer(s), internet and conference phone. Webcam optional.
Who are the instructors?
The primary instructors are Michael Taylor and Elaine Richardson of Vita Nuova, LLC, a consultancy that has focused on the redevelopment of brownfields and other complex sites for almost 20 years.
Instruction is based on the real estate principles drawn from the classic Urban Land Institute text and years of experience.
How is this different from EPA’s Superfund Redevelopment Initiative (SRI) training?
This training complements the site reuse training developed through EPA’s Superfund Redevelopment Initiative (SRI), which focuses primarily on the tools available to EPA and states to encourage redevelopment of Superfund sites.
How will I receive the certificate?
Via email, after verifying completion of the full program.
